The New York Times explores this question.  Excerpt:

“This isn’t so much about Tim Tebow,” said Lincoln Blumell, an assistant professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University and a former college quarterback. “This is about people and about religion in sports.”

I’m not an NFL fan, so I don’t really understand the contours of this dispute. Is this about intolerance for religion? Is it about intolerance for self-righteousness? Is it about Tebow the man, or is Tebow, as Prof. Blumell says, a proxy for a broader culture war? Help me understand what’s going on, people.
