30 Dead in Afghanistan After Gunmen Open Fire
Almost 30 people were killed Friday and an estimated 55 wounded after unidentified gunmen opened fire during a ceremony attended by top politicians in the Afghan capital, Kabul.
Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah escaped unharmed, officials told the BBC.
“Twenty seven bodies” had been recovered, but the number could rise, Wahidullah Mayar, health ministry spokesman, told Reuters.
The Taliban, fresh from signing a deal with the U.S. last week, denied responsibility. This violence is the first major attack on Kabul since the deal was inked last Saturday.
Islamic State militants attacked the same event, commemorating the death of an Afghan Shia leader, in 2019.
The ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of Hazara leader Abdul Ali Mazari’s death at the hands of the Taliban was being broadcast live. As gunfire rang out from a nearby building, people were seen fleeing. Special forces descended on the scene, where fighting continues.
Within 14 months, the U.S. and NATO are scheduled to withdraw their troops in return for peace talks between the Taliban and Afghan government. The Taliban also agreed to not allow the Islamic State or al-Qaeda to operate within territories they control.
Approximately 12,000 troops are still stationed in Afghanistan. President Donald Trump has promised to fulfill his campaign promise and put an end to the 19 year long conflict.
Speaking at a Fox News town hall in Scranton, Pennsylvania Thursday, Trump said he believes the Taliban wants to “make a deal.”
“These are warriors. We’ve been there for 20 years,” Trump said. “We could win that war very easily, but I don’t feel like killing millions of people to do it.”
Earlier Thursday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the recent violence in Afghanistan “unacceptable” and said that for peace talks to move forward, both the Taliban and the Afghan government would need to cease violent activity.
“In no uncertain terms, violence must be reduced immediately for the peace process to move forward,” said Pompeo.
