I can’t imagine watching more than a minute or so of a presidential debate without hanging myself, but last night’s meeting between Clinton and Obama sounds worse than usual. David Brooks (via Andrew Sullivan) on the other hand seems pleased:

We may not like it, but issues like Jeremiah Wright, flag lapels and the Tuzla airport will be important in the fall. Remember how George H.W. Bush toured flag factories to expose Michael Dukakis. It’s legitimate to see how the candidates will respond to these sorts of symbolic issues.

So the media should focus on trivial crap now because those will be the issues in the fall. Now I get it. He even holds up the substanceless 1988 campaign as an example.
