Arming Ukraine and Public Opinion

The good news is that support for arming Ukraine remains a minority view overall.

A new YouGov survey found that more Americans still oppose arming Ukraine than support it, but a slight majority of Republicans is now in favor:

As William Jordan explains in his remarks about the survey, there has been an increase in support for sending arms since last summer. According to an earlier survey taken in July, only 25% supported this option then. At that time, pluralities of Democrats, independents, and Republicans were against sending weapons to Ukraine. The change in public opinion on this question has been driven almost entirely by Republicans, as 44% were opposed to sending arms last summer and now just 23% are. That change has been probably happened in large part because of the near-unanimity among elected Republicans in favor of throwing weapons at the problem. The good news is that support for arming Ukraine remains a minority view overall, and it is has very little support among non-Republicans. There is nothing remotely close to a national consensus in favor of doing this, and that is one more reason why the U.S. shouldn’t attempt it.
