This is from the Ramadan eve dinner our reader Al-Dhariyat had with his family. He writes that the appetizer pictured above:

… is the appetizer eaten after sunset to break the fast. Dates are commonly used throughout the Muslim world to break the fast, regardless of cultural origin. The rest is Bangladeshi/South Asian, so to speak. Black chana (chickpeas), soaked during the day then cooked with sauteed onions. The little orange patty is a daal’er bora – red lentils (masoor) soaked during the day, then drained and processed into a paste, mixed with some spices and onions and lightly fried. One of my favorites! All of it finished with lebu shorbet, or lime-ade. At least in my culture, we prefer limes to lemons.

I want to eat at Mama Dhariyat’s table. A blessed Ramadan to the Dhariyat family (not their real name, but you know what I mean.)
