An October Surprise On the First Night of October

President Trump has announced a positive COVID-19 result, a morbid result stunning a nation and convulsing the presidential race in the home stretch.

President Donald Trump said just after midnight Tuesday that he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” the president said on his Twitter feed.

“This evening I received confirmation that both President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for [COVID-19]” said physician Sean P. Conley in a memorandum to White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

Though the pandemic has raged in the United States for much of the year, the reality of a positive test for the most famous human on Earth is sure to convulse both the presidential race and the perception of the virus globally. Other heads of government who have tested positive include Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil and Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom, both relative allies of Trump. Johnson’s battle was particularly trying and he conceded after recovery that he could have died.

The status of future debates between Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who is a few years older, is now at the very least up in the air. The duel between the two earlier this week attracted considerable controversy; there had already been discussion of scrapping the remaining debates. Vice President Pence, first in line to the presidency, and California Senator Kamala Harris are still slated to debate next week.

Trump, unlike Biden, has gone out of his way to pursue an amended, but relatively normal campaign schedule— while Biden has bunkered down. That Trump has now tested positive will doubtless draw howls from his less restrained opponents.

On Thursday evening, news broke that Hope Hicks, his longtime consigliere, had tested positive for COVID-19. She had been been on board Air Force One with the president in his travels this week.

The president made the announcement of his own positive test result hours later.
