Sore Winners, Social Conservative Version
I’ve observed in this space that gay rights activists tend to be sore winners about their victories, operating as if it weren’t enough that they win; the other side must have their noses rubbed in the dirt. From Mississippi, which just passed a religious freedom law guaranteeing businesses that don’t want to serve gays the right to do so, comes news of a sore-winner response from the Tupelo-based American Family Association:
This sticker is being placed in windows of Mississippi businesses by their owners.
Ironically, this sticker represents the very promotion of discrimination…against the freedom of religious convictions.
Businesses that display this sticker believe Christians should be forced, by law, to embrace homosexuality and deny their faith in personal business practices.
The homosexual lobby is bitter against Governor Bryant’s signing of the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which protects Christian business owners against lawsuits from gay activists. The typical response is to spread their hatred for religious truths by attacking and intimidating Christians.
We believe Christian business owners have the inalienable right to refuse to participate in, or provide service to, same-sex marriage ceremonies and activities if it violates their religious convictions. The businesses listed below are spreading hateful rhetoric against the religious freedoms and convictions of Christians.
Oh, come on, that’s ridiculous. They are doing no such thing. They’re just saying they want to engage in commerce with gay customers. I support the right of business people like wedding photographers to withhold their services from gay customers on grounds of religious belief, but depending on the kind of business I owned, I would consider putting one of those stickers in my window too. In any case, if a business owner wants to declare his or her opposition to the Mississippi bill by doing this, so what? Am I to think that a business owner who wants to express his willingness to serve gay clientele hates Christians because of that fact? Ridiculous.
AFA, you won this round in your state. Be gracious in victory. By insisting that your victory be total and crushing, you are engaging in the same intolerance as the other side.
