Santorum was fiscally irresponsible during his last term in the Senate, and it turns out that Santorum is irresponsible with his own money, too (via Andrew):

“I walked away from all of the jobs that I had and all the money,” Santorum said at the Dayton Christian School. He and his wife Karen have been “spending down our savings,” he said.

“That’s not necessarily the best thing to do when you have three kids entering college in the next three years, but our country is worth it,” he said.

Presumably, Santorum will end the nomination fight with more than a few job opportunities waiting for him. Huckabee was able to translate his briefly competitive presidential run into a lucrative career, and Santorum can probably do likewise once the nominating contest is over. Even so, there’s nothing particularly admirable about burning through the family savings to indulge in a glorified ego trip that involves the pursuit of enormous personal power. Maybe Santorum’s not too worried about this. After all, he doesn’t want his children going to college to be remade in Obama’s image.
