Pence and the War on Yemen

The administration's disgraceful ongoing support for the war on Yemen and the bogus claims they have made to keep it going prove why we can't trust them about Iran now.

The vice president dismissed the complaints from Sens. Lee and Paul about the administration’s awful briefing yesterday by bringing up the other illegal administration war they have voted against:

While Pence said he had “great respect” for Lee and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who joined with his Utah colleague in critiquing the briefing, “the truth is both of them have voted against the military action that’s been taken by this administration in self-defense in Yemen and in the region, and we respectfully disagree with them,” the vice president told ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

It is strange that Pence would remind everyone that last week’s illegal assassination isn’t the first time that this administration has ignored the Constitution in matters of war, since that makes the criticism from Sens. Lee and Paul that much stronger. Yes, Sens. Lee and Paul have been consistent and principled in their objections to Trump’s illegal wars. That makes their criticism of the administration today impossible to dismiss, and it makes Pence’s attempt to do so look even more pathetic.

Pence’s description of U.S. involvement in the war on Yemen as “self-defense” is nonsense. The Saudi coalition’s war is not a defensive war. They are the ones that escalated the conflict almost five years ago, and they are the ones that have been causing most of the civilian casualties in the war. Our support for them has nothing to do with their self-defense or ours. Our involvement there was never authorized by Congress, it is unjustified, and it is a disgrace. Congress specifically voted to end our involvement. Demonstrating his contempt for the Constitution and our representatives, the president vetoed their antiwar resolution last year. Pence thinks that he is somehow undermining their arguments by calling attention to their earlier antiwar votes, but instead he is reminding the public that this administration has made a habit of flouting the Constitution and ignoring Congress.

The administration’s disgraceful ongoing support for the war on Yemen and the bogus claims they have made to keep it going prove why we can’t trust them about Iran now.
