We’re chicken people in our family. We have hens in the backyard, for whom we care greatly. Discovering the video above was quite an emotional blow, but it was an important one to sustain, because it reminded us that factory farming of animals is immoral, and why it’s immoral. To deliberately subject a living creature to that kind of torture is wrong. What the video shows is not torture — this is not an atrocity video — but it shows how battery-raised hens respond when they see sunlight for the first time, and are able to stretch their wings and their legs. It’s very moving. Call me a romantic, but when I watch these birds react that way, and I reflect on what they’ve been deprived of, I see evidence of a kind of sacrilege. I really do. Happily, the hens in this video were freed because the farmer had a change of heart.
