Support TAC’s Summer Campaign

Our country is at a crossroads. Protests and riots are raging in our cities. The coronavirus pandemic is still very much affecting our lives. And there’s a momentous presidential election looming in just a few short months.

In this uncertain time, the wisdom of the conservative intellectual tradition is needed more than ever—and at The American Conservative, we’re proud to be leading the conversation on what the political right should look like in 2020 and beyond.

Just look at our latest print issue. We gathered leading conservative thinkers to answer the question, “What is American conservatism?”, resulting in the most robust issue in our magazine’s nearly twenty-year history. Among the many highlights:

  • Former TAC editor Daniel McCarthy argued that American conservatism is far more than a philosophical commitment to classical liberalism
  • David Azerrad offered a blistering indictment of modern conservatism, lamenting that it’s nothing more than “the endless wars, the nation-building,…the free trade fetish,..the unconscionable refusal to clamp down on immigration.”
  • Neal Freeman offered a defense of the “three-legged stool” of fusionism
  • Patrick Deneen argued that conservatism is a natural home working-class Americans.

Every essay is a gem. If you haven’t already, you can pick up a copy here. And you may notice our print issue looks and feels a little different this time around: We’ve re-vamped the layout with heavier, glossy pages and full color print.

We’re in the midst of our summer campaign, and we need your help to make these improvements permanent. We have big plans ahead as we redesign our print magazine, invest in our newly-launched podcasts, expand our Constitutional Fellows program, and scale up our digital footprint—but we can’t do it alone.

Ours is truly a grassroots movement to reclaim a “Main Street” conservatism. We don’t have the entrenched endowments or corporate dollars of Conservatism Inc. We rely on the generosity of our readers: 92% of our revenue comes from donations. And the median gift is just $60.

And yet, we consistently punch above our weight. As Rod Dreher wrote on his blog last week:

Maybe you saw that Justice Alito cited The Benedict Option in his recent majority opinion on an important religious liberty case. If not for TAC, where I worked out these ideas, there would have been no Benedict Option book.

It’s not just on religious liberty where our influence is felt. This past January, four different TAC contributors all appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight to explain why escalating tensions with Iran would not serve America’s vital interests in the Middle East. According to a report from AP News, their commentary had a direct impact on policy, as President Trump “told confidants that Carlson’s strong advocacy not to escalate the situation in Iran played a role in his decision-making.”

And this past April, a lengthy profile of TAC in Vanity Fair wrote that our magazine “has resonated lately in the president’s policy circles,” with “TAC articles regularly passed around and referenced in [the administration]”—all while we “have shown a consistent willingness to check the president” when he deviates from our principles.

From the future of faith, to realism & restraint in foreign affairs, to a humane economy that puts people and place over the global corporate behemoths, TAC is driving the national conversation and affecting policy. Please join us in this vital work by making a one-time gift here, or by becoming a sustaining monthly member with a gift of just $5, $10, or $20 per month here. If you give $250 or more, we’ll send you a signed copy of In Defense of Andrew Jackson, by TAC scholar-at-large Dr. Bradley J. Birzer. His stirring defense of Old Hickory is more timely than ever in our cultural moment.

And, thanks to the generous folks at the T.W. Lewis Foundation, every donation to our summer campaign will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $15,000.

The American Conservative has always been the voice of Main Street Americans. Stand with us and let that voice be heard.
