John Hindraker (via Glenn Reynolds) correctly exposes the the incoherence of the Democrats and Nancy Pelosi on gas prices:

The Democrats’ domestic policies are an incoherent jumble: they want lower gasoline and heating oil prices, but they block the very things, oil drilling and the construction of new refineries, that would actually reduce them. At the same time, for reasons of “climate change,” they want less consumption of oil and gas, which implies higher, not lower, prices.

It’s rare that I can say that I agree for the most part with Hindraker, but this is one of those times. He is omitting someone, however, who should get the same criticism–John McCain. The Arizona senator favors a cap-and-trade plan for carbon emission that would surely raise gas prices, yet he also is pandering to voters with his idiotic gas tax holiday plan. McCain also opposes drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge, as Hugh Hewitt angrily noted back in January (note that Hewitt believes drilling for oil to be a conservative value).

McCain, who once styled himself as a “straight talker” has become pretty good at telling voters what they want to hear when it suits him. It’s almost as if Republicans can be as bad as Democrats at times, but I doubt that Hindraker can see that.
