Trump May Launch Another Illegal Attack on Syria

Trump is considering another illegal attack [1] on the Syrian government:

The Trump administration has considered new military action against the Syrian government in response to reports of ongoing chemical weapons use, officials said, raising the prospect of a second U.S. strike on President Bashar al-Assad in less than a year.

Trump had no authority to order the attack on Syrian forces last year, and he still doesn’t have it now. There is no international mandate for U.S. forces to be in Syria, nor is there any authorization for military action against Syrian government forces or their allies. If Trump orders another illegal attack, the U.S. will be committing more acts of war against a government that poses no threat to us, has done nothing to us or our treaty allies, and is still fighting inside its own internationally recognized borders. The Syrian government’s tactics are deplorable, but by themselves they do not give the U.S. the right or authority to take up arms against them. It is not possible to maintain an international norm while violating the most basic prohibitions of international law.

Following the clash with pro-regime mercenaries last month, our continued illegal military presence is more dangerous than ever, and launching another attack on the Syrian government could put U.S. forces in greater jeopardy. There continues to be a risk of escalation that could drag the U.S. into a larger conflict. The U.S. should be withdrawing all of its forces from Syria instead of looking for new excuses to initiate hostilities against another government.

Unfortunately, it has been several decades since we have had a president who cares at all about what he has the legal or constitutional authority to do in international affairs. President Trump has stopped paying even lip-service to the concept.

You’re assuming Trump has any idea what you’re talking about Daniel. He doesn’t, and he doesn’t care. At this point he’ll probably bomb Syria just to change the topic. And that’s exactly why we need to remove him from office.

Trump doesn’t acknowledge “the law” and “legality”. Legality is for weak sisters. He’s all about power and using it however he sees fit. He still gives lip service to democracy because the fools who vote for him still seem to like the idea, but outside the US? Forget it – he’s increasingly contemptuous of any putative limits on his exercise of power, and he’s therefore liable to bomb, kill, blockade, starve, destroy whomsoever.

what is our endgame in Syria? Regime change? Short of a major invasion, we are not going to get rid of the Assad regime. Do we really want a major war in Syria with the Russians, Iranians, Turks and others involved? Also, how did that invasion and regime change go in Iraq?

Even if we launched a major invasion in Syria and installed a client government, it would not work. Any new government would have little acceptance among the Syrian people and we would be stuck there with thousands of troops on the ground for decades. No thanks.

@Uncle Billy
That’s my question. I’m not the most subtle FB thinker, but it seems that our justifications for being there were always murky at best, and now even more so…what is there to gain in Syria at this point…?

Other than, I supposed, trying to stick it to Israel by beating up on an ally of Iraq…but oy…what a waste.
