The Saudi Threat Against Qatar

Saudi Arabia has reportedly threatened [1] to attack Qatar if they purchase an air defense system from Russia:

Saudi Arabia has threatened military action against Qatar if it goes ahead and acquires Russia’s top of the range S-400 air defence missile system, Le Monde daily reported.

Citing information it had obtained, Le Monde said Friday that Riyadh had written to French President Emmanuel Macron asking him to intervene to prevent the deal going ahead and to help preserve regional stability.

The Russian response has been to dismiss [2] the Saudi threats as irrelevant, and it appears that the sale will go ahead. The Saudi threats may be empty, but after a year of unsuccessfully bullying Qatar with their blockade they may be willing to follow through on them. The fact that the Saudis are willing to threaten another country with an illegal attack like this underscores just how reckless and destabilizing Saudi Arabia has become in the last few years. The Saudis and their allies have already devastated neighboring Yemen over the last three years, and now they threaten to use force against another neighbor without the slightest justification. U.S. indulgence has helped to encourage the Saudis to become this regional menace, so it is up to the U.S. to end its support for this reckless client .

“The fact that the Saudis are willing to threaten another country with an illegal attack like this underscores just how reckless and destabilizing Saudi Arabia has become “

… and our own illegal attacks have emboldened other countries to commit illegal attacks. A sick feedback loop: Saudi Arabia, a US client state, apes US illegality. The US gives the lie to reputation as a responsible world power by aping Israel’s contempt for international law – and Israel is itself of course a US client state. A moral circle jerk for the ages.

Given that the US has a huge base in Qatar, and very tight relations with its military, why would the Russians sell their top-grade anti-aircraft system to them? The US military will be all over it within a week of its arrival.

Of course, the Russians don’t sell their top-end stuff to anybody without modifications that downgrade its capabilities (they used to call them the “monkey versions”) but still…

The Saudi armed forces are better known for their effete love of luxury than any martial prowess. They had once purchased an entire years’s worth of Baccarat crystal works’ production to outfit their officers’ mess. Back in the 90s when I did my French military service our basic training was considered advanced commando training for the Saudis our government had agreed to provide training for. Despite that, all of those sent were Jordanians or other non-native-born Saudis.

The idea that they would last more than an hour against the Turks sent to reinforce Qatar is simply laughable. They could try and use the mercenaries they rent from Pakistan (a big source of hard-currency revenues for the Pak army), but it’s doubtful even the notoriously venal Pakistani government would allow that.

A gem from the article linked to in Larison’s post:

In April, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir warned Doha [JB:capital of Qatar] that it faced “imminent demise” unless it funded a US military presence in Syria.

So Qatar must fund the US military so the US military can keep killing Syrians so US politicians can keep getting AIPAC money – or else the Saudis will liquidate Qatar.

Jews, Christians and Muslims working together harmoniously to commit genocide of anyone who doesn’t kowtow to their demands – truly, Abrahamic people are a light unto nations, a shining city upon a hill, and a blessing on all humanity. Mazel tov, praise Jesus, and Allah hu akbar. We lowly idolaters, infidels, heathens and kaffirs are privileged to share the planet with your exalted selves.

Well, such a threat would bring the world closer to a Second Cold War, with the russians forced to support the Iranians as the Saudies make more wars and encroachings…

@ TheSnark: With all due respect, such a downgrading is done by EVERY provider of military equipment, just in case such devices felt in the hands of enemies, or the buyer became one such enemy.

Wait, the Saudi and Israel are now US client states?

When did the tables turn and why didn’t anyone tell me? I thought that the US was the client, at least they act like a client or a puppet or something.

I’m so confused.

@Janwaar Bibi

Funny, darkly, and sadly too true. Thanks.
