The Washington Post reported this morning that police arrested an armed man outside of Brett Kavanaugh’s home. The suspect reportedly told police he wanted to kill Kavanaugh. The Post only said that the suspect was carrying “at least one weapon” and “burglary tools.”

The federal affidavit claims the man possessed a Glock 17 pistol, pepper spray, zip ties, a tactical knife, and a crow bar, among other items.

The suspect, a white man in his twenties, was “upset” about the leaked draft Dobbs opinion that would overturn the national “right to an abortion,” and believed Kavanaugh “would side with Second Amendment decisions that would loosen gun control laws,” according to the affidavit. He “had traveled to [Kavanaugh’s] Montgomery County residence” from his home on the West Coast “with the intent to break into the Justice’s house and to kill the Justice and then himself.” He told police that he intended to kill the Justice to “give his life purpose.”

The incident comes just two years after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stood on the steps of the Supreme Court and promised Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh that they “have unleashed the whirlwind” and “will pay the price,” adding that they “won’t know what hit [them]” if they ruled in favor of abortion restrictions.

There is plenty to be said about “hypocrisy” here—how the media reaction would be different if Sonia Sotomayor were the subject of the murder attempt rather than a conservative Justice, or how Schumer’s language amounted to incitement by the left’s own standards, or how progressive violence is framed as either aberrational or justified while right-wing violence is taken as evidence of the inherent violence of right-wing politics. But that discourse is a dead-end.

Men like this suspect who feel they have no purpose are prone to do terrible things. That’s not an excuse, but a fact. Look at the roster of ISIS or your average Chicago street gang. It’s not made up of Maddies and Jessicas.

We need to give men something to live for. In most cases, that will make men happier and our politics less volatile. In marginal cases, it will prevent lunatics like this twenty-something from California from driving cross-country to murder a Supreme Court Justice in an attempt to give their lives “purpose.”
