Each Traditional-Nationalist Movement Has Common Cause

Asked to name the defining attributes of the America we wish to become, many liberals would answer that we must realize our manifest destiny since 1776, by becoming more equal, more diverse and more democratic—and the model for mankind’s future.

Equality, diversity, democracy—this is the holy trinity of the post-Christian secular state at whose altars Liberal Man worships.

But the congregation worshiping these gods is shrinking. And even Europe seems to be rejecting what America has on offer.

In a retreat from diversity, Catalonia just voted to separate from Spain. The Basque and Galician peoples of Spain are following the Catalan secession crisis with great interest.

The right-wing People’s Party and far-right Freedom Party just swept 60 percent of Austria’s vote, delivering the nation to 31-year-old Sebastian Kurz, whose anti-immigrant platform was plagiarized from the Freedom Party. Summarized it is: Austria for the Austrians!

Lombardy, whose capital is Milan, and Veneto will vote Sunday for greater autonomy from Rome.

South Tyrol (Alto Adige), severed from Austria and ceded to Italy at Versailles, written off by Hitler to appease Mussolini after his Anschluss, is astir anew with secessionism. Even the Sicilians are talking of separation.

By Sunday, the Czech Republic may have a new leader, billionaire Andrej Babis. Writes the Washington Post, Babis “makes a sport of attacking the European Union and says NATO’s mission is outdated.”

Platform Promise: Keep the Muslim masses out of the motherland.

To ethnonationalists, their countrymen are not equal to all others, but superior in rights. Many may nod at Thomas Jefferson’s line that “All men are created equal,” but they no more practice that in their own nations than did Jefferson in his.

On Oct. 7, scores of thousands of Poles lined up along the country’s entire 2,000-mile border—to pray the rosary.

It was the centennial of the Virgin Mary’s last apparition at Fatima in Portugal in 1917, and the day in 1571 the Holy League sank the Muslim fleet at Lepanto to save Europe. G. K. Chesterton’s poem, “Lepanto,” was once required reading in Catholic schools.

Each of these traditionalist-nationalist movements is unique, but all have a common cause. In the hearts of Europe’s indigenous peoples is embedded an ancient fear: loss of the homeland to Islamic invaders.

Europe is rejecting, resisting, recoiling from “diversity,” the multiracial, multicultural, multiethnic and multilingual future that, say U.S. elites, is America’s preordained mission to bring about for all mankind.

Indeed, increasingly, the indigenous peoples of Europe seem to view as the death of their nations and continent, what U.S. liberal elites see as the Brave New World to come.

To traditionalist Europeans, our heaven looks like their hell.

Thus Poles fall on their knees to pray to the Virgin Mary to spare them from threats of an Islamic future, as their ancestors prayed at the time of Lepanto, and of Vienna in 1683, when the Polish King John Sobieski marched to halt the last Muslim drive into the heart of Europe.

European peoples and parties are today using democratic means to achieve “illiberal” ends. And it is hard to see what halts the drift away from liberal democracy toward the restrictive right. For in virtually every nation, there is a major party in opposition, or a party in power, that holds deeply nationalist views.

European elites may denounce these new parties as “illiberal” or fascist, but it is becoming apparent that it may be liberalism itself that belongs to yesterday. For more and more Europeans see the invasion of the continent along the routes whence the invaders came centuries ago, not as a manageable problem but an existential crisis.

To many Europeans, it portends an irreversible alteration in the character of the countries their grandchildren will inherit, and possibly an end to their civilization. And they are not going to be deterred from voting their fears by being called names that long ago lost their toxicity from overuse.

And as Europeans decline to celebrate the racial, ethnic, creedal and cultural diversity extolled by American elites, they also seem to reject the idea that foreigners should be treated equally in nations created for their own kind.

Europeans seem to admire more, and model their nations more, along the lines of the less diverse America of the Eisenhower era, than on the America of 2017.

And Europe seems to be moving toward immigration policies more like the McCarran-Walter Act of 1950 than the open borders bill that Sen. Edward Kennedy shepherded through the Senate in 1965.

Kennedy promised that the racial and ethnic composition of the America of the 1960s would not be overturned, and he questioned the morality and motives of any who implied that it would.

So, why is liberalism dying?

Because it is proving to be what James Burnham called it in his 1964 “Suicide of the West” — the ideology of Western suicide.

What we see in Europe today is people who, belatedly recognizing this, have begun to “rage, rage, against dying of the light.”

Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of a new book, “Nixon’s White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever.”

Translation: blame it on ‘foreigners’, whatever your complaint may be. And never accept any challenge or change to God’s ordained social hierarchy of what race and ethnic community is on top, who takes out the rubbish, and who can pick the fruit.
And all must share the meaning of Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving [redemption, shopping, and over-eating, respectively].

Pat, you may dress-up your articles with quotes and history, but the thrust is more and more on fear and hatred of “others”.

Thank you –

Class, repeat after me; “Thank you, Ms. Merkel ”
Mr Buchanan has a unique talent for slipping thorns under the rumps of those who would wish to silence him.

Oh golly, and I forgot to say that perhaps it’s my Teutonic heritage that gets it’s nose out of joint on this subject.
On this one I’m more of a mind with my ancestral continental descendants than I am with the ruling class in the land of my birth.

Um, no. Pat doesn’t want non-Europeans ‘picking fruit’ or ‘taking rubbish’ in Europe. He doesn’t want them in Europe (in large numbers) at all. And he wants these jobs to be done by Europeans.

I also didn’t see any evidence of ‘hatred’ in his essay.

Your total failure to understand what your opponents are thinking (and for the record I largely though not wholly agree with Mr. Buchanan’s criticism of mass migration here) is a good example of why you’re turning out to have a difficult time combatting it. This isn’t about wanting to keep Africans and Asians poor, or about God-ordained ‘hierarchies’, or about hatred: it’s about wanting to keep Europe ethnically European.

Your failure to understand

There is absolutely no reason why Democracy and Liberalism have to go together. Furthermore, as a student of the early modern history whence liberalism originated, the idea that liberalism and diversity, meaning the intentional changing of a countries demographics, are somehow tied together, is laughable. Liberalism WAS nationalism. The Ancien Regimes of Europe were based on the holdings of kings, dukes, and barons, not on the nationality or ethnicity of the people. The rise of liberalism and nationalism went together and could not be separated. The changing of demographics has always been accomplished through the spontaneous movement of peoples, regardless of politics (such as the Germanic migrations or the european settlement of North America, neither of which could have been easily stopped by governments, or by the deliberate actions of governments to control their peoples (such as the exiles of the peoples of Judah by the Babylonians or the importation of immigrants in Europe and America now). Diversity is hardly liberal. When Napoleon’s forces spread revolutionary values (Ironic, since Napoleon pretty much rejected those values for France) they kickstarted nationalism in Europe. They didn’t create the desire for Germans to move to France.

#7 Comment By Will Harrington On October 20, 2017 @ 11:04 am

Kenbrodo, thanks. You reminded me of another illiberal reason to change demographics. Slavery in the New World was done to provide cheap labor. It is no different now. Turning a blind eye to illegal immigration is usually done to preserve a poorly payed labor pool that aren’t much different from slaves. We are where we are now. The people who want to send you to the back of the bus are a small (if recently loud) minority. I doubt seriously that Pat is among them. So the question is do we (including you) as a nation now, want to keep importing virtual slaves so that you and I (unless you are among the well payed elite) can have our wages suppressed? White nationalism (or black nationalism) is foolish. White does not constitute a nation, not does black. Despite what is going on with the polarization of our culture we are (to steal a line from Red Green) in this together.

#8 Comment By Petrus On October 20, 2017 @ 11:25 am

Wanting to preserve one’s country for the nation that has has built and defended it for over a thousand years, and framed it within Christianity is not racism. And to simplify it to white/black issue is shear contemporary feel-good American stupidity stemmed from ignorance, as most of the white European nations and countries are multiethnic and multireligious within the white race anyway.

#9 Comment By Tidewater Virginian On October 20, 2017 @ 11:25 am

kenbrodo: that is not what this article means, nor do any of Mr. Buchanan’s articles. Blacks are a part of our people and culture, even though traditional black culture may be a culture of its own. Blacks have been mistreated in our history, but they are still a part of our culture. Rejecting the “god” of diversity does not mean we return to old relations with blacks.

Our traditional cultures present throughout the States is plenty of diversity for us. The current leftist goal is a uniformity of no culture. It is a false diversity.

It may be that liberal democracy is on the defensive against illiberal democracy and democratic illiberalism, but that may only mean that the American project deserves stronger protections. Regardless of how Europeans come to understand whose blood was spilled on what soil at what moment in history, the nation called the United States of America IS a creedal nation, where blood was spilled for ideas rather than soil. White Americans from a variety of European societies fought white British to establish independence, after all, and White Americans are not the equivalent of “Europe’s indigenous peoples”. It has been a long time (if ever) since the ‘nation-state’ with its borders maintained through international law and commercial agreements was coterminous with ethnicity/language/culture

Europe was forged in the span of some two thousand years by blood, sweat and tears of all Her Peoples, now nations, and now some ‘confused’ people want to take it over with fake and distopian ideas. The whole economic and migration crises are artificial creations by the fake liberals, neoliberals and neocons by creating, based on their false economic and social principles, failed states that push their people to look for better life somewhere else. I think that what is happening now with the economic and migration crises in Europe and America it is some kind of sinister attempt by the pseudo-liberals and neoliberal/neocon new oligarchy to repeat the fall of the Rome (around 476 AD) by flooding the West with ‘migrants’ to possibly extend their controls over people by a few more centuries, more or less. New disruptive socioeconomic experiment at its best.

Perhaps those “others” shouldn’t have behaved that troglodytic way they do on the streets of Italian, French or German cities? Now it’s too late. They can blame only themselves and the globalist “elites” who let them in the countries where they were not welcome.

To those liberals who take offense – why should Eastern Europeans have to give up their land to so-called Islamic refugees? You have no reason beyond feel good platitudes about human rights and other things of that nature. They are not interested in your human rights. They are interested in their children and grandchildren inheriting their hundreds-year old civilizations. Something the West has long ago given up on, so racked with guilt (ignoring the fact all of human history is soaked with the blood of war) and long since lost the will to go on. Eastern Europe will become the final light of European civilization and may one day have to liberate Western Europe from the darkness of multiculturalism and moral relativism.

I think Deep Blue Washington got it right. The main problem, and the root of many others, is that the first world is too concerned with “accomplishment” and wealth, which makes its people put off family formation (which makes it less likely in the end).

Two causes of this are feminism and atheism. I am an atheist, but I don’t “push” atheism anymore, and won’t ever again.

Europe has numerous nations and peoples who view each other as distinct and different. Yet let them immigrate to the US and 3 generations later they have largely assimilated into a more homogeneous group – they still may recognize their (now mixed) ancestry, but they are Americans now. At least among the educated, who are educated and live and work in mixed groups, the rate of intermarriage and assimilation is very high. I certainly see it in my extended family. This is very good.

And at least in their ordered family lives, it appears that the educated have resurrected a stable and family friendly environment, something that I had feared was lost three decades ago.

I have worked for years in environments that are majority skilled immigrant – and I do see intermarriages.

“Eastern Europe will become the final light of European civilization and may one day have to liberate Western Europe from the darkness of multiculturalism and moral relativism.”

Clearly, you haven’t seen the birthrate of these nations, which are even lower than that of Western Europe. Countries like Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria or Croatia (not to mention Ukraine) have already been losing population. So according to your standards, they should probably be considered dying nations as well?

B. Bagheri,

Classical liberalism is not a suicide pact nor is it about to die. It is the crowning achievement of “Western” civilization. There have been many spasms like the current one since the 18th century. None have destroyed classical liberalism or the civilization that produced it.

Could you point at a classical liberal having a prominent position in power today? Not necessarily in the US, any country of your choice.

That’s the problem. The classical liberalism is not a bad idea. But its critical flaw is that it’s merely not present today.

‘Diversity’, what does it mean since we apparently can’t get enough of it? (Though I have never come upon a mainstream politician,or political party that promised more diversity in return for votes). And will this quest for diversity go on forever, like socialistic permanent revolution? Or at some stage will ‘peak diversity’ be achieved, where is will no longer be necessary to dilute ourselves any further?
The whole thing would be funny if it wasn’t so serious.

Great point, Tidewater Virginian. Black/White relations in the US have absolutely no relevance to the Central European resistance to mass immigration of non-Europeans. kenbrodo’s post was a complete non-sequitur.

If Mister Buchanan comes across often as an “angry old white guy”, well… he is old, he is Caucasian, he is male, and he is angry at what he sees as the dissolution of his homeland.
None of that makes him a votary of Francis Parker Yockey and the Fascist International.
(I do not expect the commentators here to have that reference immediately available.)
Of course, it is easier to insult Pat Buchanan as a human being than it is to seriously engage with what he says.
(Right or wrong, he has been around long enough, and seen enough events that he deserves a hearing and not a contemptuous dismissal. Personally, I frequently disagree with what he writes, but that does not entitle me to sneer at his words.)

Pat–the secessionist movements in Europe aren’t in order to get away from Europe. They’re in order to get away from the aegis of the nation-state which they’re under. Catalonia wants to get away from Spain, but they’re perfectly happy and willing to be a part of the EU.

It’s only the Brits who are mad enough to want to run away from the EU project all together and now they’re starting to realize exactly how complicated this task is.

Go read up on your European history AGAIN and pay better attention this time, hmmm?

grumpy realist,

Catalonia wants to get away from Spain, but they’re perfectly happy and willing to be a part of the EU.

Would be interesting to see the next poll after all the sneer the EU treated their independentist cravings with.

And what’s the EU if not the countries it is composed of anyways? An empty bureaucratic mechanism. Devoid of any content. There wouldn’t be such a difference between Europe’s rich north and poor south were it not.

As Alex (the one who like Ike) points out, we don’t have classical liberalism anymore. I would disagree with Pat’s characterization of ‘illiberal democracy.’ Whether it is against the elites in Washington or Brussels, Berlin or Madrid, what most of these people want is a government FOR and BY the people. It is actually illiberal democracy that people are rebelling against! We need a reawakening of liberalism. What we have now are pseudo democracies, running out of the control of the people. The people just want to be FREE to govern themselves. It isn’t allowed by the elites in the West today because we’re all idiots too dumb to know what’s best for us.
