I just saw on TV some McCain supporter introduce the more wars, please candidate as John McCain —-“not Tiger Woods”. Keith Olberman was indignantly trying to present this as a racial slur, but it’s worth pointing out that if the GOP wants to go Atwater on Obama, this is a really lame way to go about it. Tiger Woods is the most popular athlete in the world. He is also a terrific figure as a sportsman, because he’s not only the best in his game, but super articulate, focused, prepared, all those John Stockton qualities that grinder white athletes must have in abundance. And he’s adored because of them, even by people like me who long resisted, and were even pretty dubious about, the first wave of Tigermania. In short, if Obama gets himself identified with Woods, he’d be Reagan, Roosevelt and Lincoln rolled into one, and Johnny more wars can forget about it. The Masters, the most delectable TV sports event of all, awaits…
