   When you put it like that, there would seem to be some moral pressure to aspire toward more selfless, meaningful behavior in our lives.

   Well, yeah, but did you see the Denham Springs fickle-finger story on there, too?

   I mean, framed-for-murder 1,100-pound fat women are a dime a dozen, but antisocial Denham Springs rednecks . . . are sold by the gross. And now Great Britain knows that, too.

   The Channel 2 video the Mail embedded in its story is priceless. The People of Livingston Parish are like the People of Wal-Mart, only more perversely amusing.

   The only thing this story is missing is a cameo appearance by one of the Livingston Parish-based Klan groups lobbying the woman to replace the Christmas Finger with a flaming cross instead of a swastika.

   Even better, for my money, was the story about the woman in Germany on trial for allegedly attempting to suffocate her boyfriend with her breasts.

   There are times, after reading Peter Hitchen’s blog, that I will hesitantly click on the Daily Mail icon in the top left and sit with mouth agape at the ridiculousness that ensues.

   It makes Fox News look serious. And is it ever entertaining.

   It’s interesting to note how popular, or maybe I should say widely read, the Daily Mail has become in the US. A fair number of people whom I wouldn’t peg as readers of foreign papers read it or at least check out the webpage. Obviously, the online version reaches a US audience and is pitched deliberately to readers outside the UK. But that means there’s a perception of a significant audience. I would be very interested to see what London papers besides the Daily Mail have frequent US readers. My guess would be the Telegraph and the Financial Times, but the latter is a very different readership from the Mail. Telegraph readers might look at both, thinking the Mail a downmarket, guilty pleasure and the FT comment section hopelessly slavish to Brussels. Some might say that the FT is now a transatlantic paper, and I’ll take the qualification since part of its content comes out of New York.

   Rod, given your professional interest in journalism and the fact that you’ve written many posts on the future of newspapers in print and online, I’d be interested to get your thought on the popularity of the London press in various forms among US readers.

   By the way, I like the Mail too

   Rod, you nailed it! When I read Daily Mail I keep one eye over my shoulder and hope I don’t get busted. But you know what I love about it: pretentious ain’t in it. The Daily Mail is a great antidote to self-important journalism.

   It is good advice to google the names of people you date because their names might come up in a story in the Daily Mail, and you will be glad you found out about it.

   I know this from experience.

   Not everyone loves the Daily Mail. Here’s a criticism from a Brit who saw its “gleeful embrace of hysteria”, in Luke Daxon’s phrase, have a negative effect on his family.

   Ordinarily I’d link, but I’ve been bounced into spam a few times lately, so here’s the title of the YouTube clip “Why The Daily Mail is Evil (at The @PodDelusion’s 3rd birthday do)”. (Warning: salty language).

    The Mail has two home pages for the site, one targeting readers in the U.K. and the other, mailonline.com, aimed at American readers. Smart, that.

    BTW, this blog is a daily “must” for me, and I enjoy other American Conservative writers, but I also love me some Guardian — it’s a very, very good paper.

    I’m funny that way, I guess.

    For whatever reason, the Daily Mail sometimes manages to give a more complete version of U.S. stories, with more and better photos, than the U.S. media manages. Half the stories are a lurid side show that make me ashamed to be reading, but it is what it is. I read it too.
