Israeli intelligence steps up its activity in the U.S. — and gets away with it.

Israeli government claims that it does not spy on the United States are intended for the media and popular consumption. The reality is that Israel’s intelligence agencies target the United States intensively, particularly in pursuit of military and dual-use civilian technology. Among nations considered to be friendly to Washington, Israel leads all others in its active espionage directed against American companies and the Defense Department. It also dominates two commercial sectors that enable it to extend its reach inside America’s domestic infrastructure: airline and telecommunications security. Israel is believed to have the ability to monitor nearly all phone records originating in the United States, while numerous Israeli air-travel security companies are known to act as the local Mossad stations.
As tensions with Iran increase, sources in the counterintelligence community report that Israeli agents have become more aggressive in targeting Muslims living in the United States as well as in operating against critics. There have been a number of cases reported to the FBI about Mossad officers who have approached leaders in Arab-American communities and have falsely represented themselves as “U.S. intelligence.” Because few Muslims would assist an Israeli, this is done to increase the likelihood that the target will cooperate. It’s referred to as a “false flag” operation.
Mossad officers sought to recruit Arab-Americans as sources willing to inform on their associates and neighbors. The approaches, which took place in New York and New Jersey, were reportedly handled clumsily, making the targets of the operation suspicious. These Arab-Americans turned down the requests for cooperation, and some of the contacts were eventually reported to the FBI, which has determined that at least two of the Mossad officers are, ironically, Israeli Arabs operating out of Israel’s mission to the United Nations in New York under cover as consular assistants.
In another bizarre case, U.S.S. Liberty survivor Phil Tourney was recently accosted in Southern California by a foreigner who eventually identified himself as an Israeli government representative. Tourney was taunted, and the Israeli threatened both him and journalist Mark Glenn, who has been reporting on the Liberty story. Tourney was approached in a hotel lounge, and it is not completely clear how the Israeli was able to identify him. But he knew exactly who Tourney was, as the official referred to the Liberty, saying that the people who had been killed on board had gotten what they deserved. There were a number of witnesses to the incident, including Tourney’s wife. The threat has been reported to the FBI, which is investigating, but Tourney and Glenn believe that the incident is not being taken seriously by the bureau.
FBI sources indicate that the increase in Mossad activity is a major problem, particularly when Israelis are posing as U.S. government officials, but they also note that there is little they can do to stop it as the Justice Department refuses to initiate any punitive action or prosecutions of the Mossad officers who have been identified as involved in the illegal activity.
In another ongoing Israeli spy case, Stewart Nozette appears to be headed towards eventual freedom as his case drags on through the District of Columbia courts. Nozette, an aerospace scientist with a top secret clearance and access to highly sensitive information, offered to sell classified material to a man he believed to be a Mossad officer, but who instead turned out to be with the FBI. Nozette has been in jail since October, but he has now been granted an additional 90-day delay so his lawyers can review the documents in the government’s case, many of which are classified. If Nozette demands that sensitive information be used in his defense, his case will likely follow the pattern set in the nine-times-postponed trial of AIPAC spies Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman, who were ultimately acquitted in April 2009 when prosecutors determined that they could not make their case without doing significant damage to national security. A month after Rosen and Weissman were freed, Ben-Ami Kadish, who admitted to providing defense secrets to Israel while working as an engineer at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, walked out of a Manhattan court after paying a fine. He did no jail time and continues to receive his substantial Defense Department pension.
The mainstream media reported the Rosen and Weissman trial intermittently, but there was virtually no coverage of Ben-Ami Kadish, and there has been even less of Nozette. Compare that with the recent reporting on the Russian spies who, by all accounts, did almost nothing and never obtained any classified information. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that spying for Israel is consequence free.

Israel has enemies committed to its destruction so it’s no surprise to me that theyll try to gather all the information anywhere it can be found in order to most effectively counter those efforts. From the article it sounds like even those who do it clumsily are able walk away free [although for some reason Pollard is the exception and is still serving a surprising long sentence in jail] so where is the incentive to cease? I suppose that if the US gov’t cared that the Mossad was obtaining this information they’d take steps to prevent it.It’s possible that they’re trying and are just inept but I haven’t reached that conclusion.
That part about USS Liberty survivior being harassed is outrageous. He should have punch out that Israeli jerkwad.
Given the Phil Tourney incident, Mossad may be considering stepping up it’s intimidation efforts to include assault and murder. They’ve done it elsewhere. It’s hard to believe that they would impersonate US government officials without some mutual understanding with our government. Surely line officers within the FBI find this galling. What happens if a law abiding US citizen shoots a Mossad officer? The mind boogles at how our government could keep that under wraps.
I think Israel is operating from Great Britian’s pre-war playbook. The British operated very agressively in the US of the late Thirties, early Fourties. Written acccounts claim there were liquidations.
The question is will the American people allow a foriegn government to run roughshod over them while their own government turns asside? The question answers itself. They are already doing so with the Mexican illegals.

The USS LIBERTY attack and the Lavon Affair are proof positive that Israel has no problem with killing Americans in an effort to make the attack appear as though the “Muslims did it” and make Americans more pro-Israeli. Fortunately, Admiral Mullen, Chm. of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned the Israelis that the US remembers these attacks and that they should not try it again — this time, in an effort to blame it on the Iranians. There comes a point where US national sovereignty is at stake. If we allow Israel to spy freely then why not Anna Chapman and co who seemed a lot less competent. What Israel does with information and technology is well out of Americas control ( just how did Pakistan get the bomb?)but the fallout ( literally) may end up all over us. Israel is a dangerous friend in a twitchy part of the world with an agenda that is in no way respectful of our interests. We are always there to protect Israel so a bit of respect and less interference in Americas politics would be appreciated. Videos of Bibi boasting of how he can control the Us senate does not help us deal with othere middle east countries. It’s infuriating. This is not the United States of Israel.

The Mossad uses American agents as well to do its PR work for Israel. I wouldn’t be surprised if American neocons such as John Bolton, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, and even Newt Gingrich were not active members either now or at one time. Obama administration officials, as well as U.S. lawmakers and European diplomats, passionately made the argument this spring that tough sanctions on Iran were necessary to avoid war. But contrary to their predictions, the drumbeat for war — particularly from Israel – has only increased since the U.N. Security Council adopted a new resolution against Tehran in June.
The latest in this crescendo of voices is Jeffrey Goldberg’s article in the Atlantic, “Point of No Return.” As the title suggests, it essentially makes the case (though in an uncharacteristically subtle manner by neoconservative standards) that there are no choices left — war is a fait accompli, and the only question is whether it will be initiated by Israel or by the United States.
“If the Israelis reach the firm conclusion that Obama will not, under any circumstances, launch a strike on Iran, then the countdown will begin for a unilateral Israeli attack,” Goldberg writes.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in Goldberg’s description, is a man whose back is against the wall. He cannot accommodate the Obama administration on the Palestinian issue because that would upset his 100-year-old father, and he cannot afford to have faith in Obama’s strategy to prevent a nuclear Iran through peaceful means because the threat from Iran is “existential.”
Goldberg interviewed roughly 40 former and current Israeli officials for his piece. Although his access to Israeli officials certainly doesn’t seem to be lacking, the same cannot be said about his treatment of the assumptions behind the Israeli talking points.
The most critical assumption that Israeli officials have presented publicly for the past 18 years — long before the firebrand Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stepped on the scene — is that the Iranian government is irrational and that Iran constitutes an existential threat to Israel.

I’m still burned up over the Lani Kass business that you reported. How is it that this Israeli dual citizen is still being permitted anywhere near these botched Predator strikes that kill innocent non-combatants and multiply the number of people in Muslim countries that hate us, i.e. “terrorists”? What Mr.Giraldi did not mention is that Mark Glenn is a notorious anti-Jewish Holocaust denier and Philip Tourney has spoken at the Holocaust denial group Institutute for Historical Rewiew. How convienent that Mr. Girladi does not mention this. In fact the USS Liberty Survivors organization expelled Philip Tourney for his anti-Jewish activities. The recent tension between Israel and Turkey has not fundamentally changed this relationship as of yet, though it could. Perhaps Mr. Giraldi could expound on how some the issues for which Jewish American groups have worked on Turkey’s behalf without registering as Turkish agents. The greatest threat to the national security of the United States is that monstrous little spoiled brat of a nation known as the state of Israel. Since the Liberty incident things have only gotten worse, and Israel has secured an absolute stranglehold on not only our foreign policy, but our entire government, and there is NOTHING they will not do to perpetuate it. With the Departments of State and Defense, and every US intelligence organization infiltrated, if not overrun by defacto agents of Israel, we are doomed to endure more wars and further unsustainable national debt on behalf of that malignant entity. I fear it is too late for Americans find the spine to adhere to our own principles of national interest despite the shrieks of Israel apologists equating disgust of Israel’s policies with “anti-Semitism.” (How could any sane, disinterested observer of the Middle East not be inclined toward the former?) One can only hope that as our own power and influence in the world inevitably wanes, the Europeans, Russians and Chinese will eventually find it in their own self-interest to restrain any further Israeli aggression, and the resulting instability in the region, by whatever means necessary.
If the efforts of Turkey’s lobby here in the States jeopardized the American national interest the way Israel’s lobby here does, then yes, I would call it out as well. I’m sure Phil would do the same.

If true, the Justice Department’s apparent policy to give these spies a free pass is among the troubling aspects of this story. And, being familiar with what DOJ attorneys have done in the Rosen/Weissman case, the Demjanjuk odyssey, suits brought by Rachel Corrie’s parents, the Jewish/Israeli focus of so many “terrorist” prosecution, etc etc., I have no doubt that the story is true. (Rosen/Weissman weren’t acquitted–the charges were dismissed with prejudice, an inexplicable move by Justice since the 4th Circuit had practically begged it to appeal from the district judge’s wild redefinition of the elements of the crimes charged.)

Mark Glenn, I’ll be up-front and say that I’m moderately pro-Zionist. Nevertheless, as a non-interventionist I strongly oppose our government’s support for Israel. You can check out my blog and see I gave a fairly positive review of Walt & Mearsheimer’s book. Nevertheless, the claims made about you would bear on the credibility most people would assign to your story and so it would have been a good idea for Giraldi to mention them or link to your site. I clicked on your link and found claims about Israel being involved in 9/11 and angling for the Christian & Muslim worlds to destroy themselves, as well as the suggestion that the Gulf Oil Leak was the work of some enemy. You’ve got a right to free speech and your own opinion, but no one is entitled to positive reception among others and your publications are the sort viewed with (at best) distaste by plenty of people who don’t particularly care about the Middle East. If you or Phillip have been libeled as holocaust deniers when you aren’t (and some of my best friends are), you are encouraged to clear your names.
A commenter above suggests, “Surely line officers within the FBI find this galling.” Most do, I’m sure, but the FBI is laced from top to bottom with American sayanim. What can the typical agent think, or do, when obvious sayanim within the agency are sent on overseas assignments–out of the blue–to work with American and foreign intelligence agencies? After they were interrogated and held for about 2 months they were quietly sent back to Israel where they then appeared on an Israeli talk show, admitted they were Mossad and said they had been sent to America to “document the event”.

Could you corroborate your story that they claimed that the reason they had been sent to America was to document the event, rather than the purpose of their filming? I don’t know Hebrew and haven’t seen a copy of the footage and any rate, but Ellner preceded his statement about purpose with “Nothing of the kind, the fact of the matter is, we are coming from a country that experiences terror daily”. The way the story has been reported, his “nothing of the kind” is referring to the claim that they were celebrating the destruction rather than merely documenting an event that occurred nearby.
Giraldi argues here that Mossad agents are still in this country, targeting Muslims. The official story for what those five agents were doing was the same thing: spying on New York Muslims believed to be connected to groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad (that’s what someone from the C.I.A said, an official from the Israeli embassy denies they were part of any intelligence operation). Occam’s Razor weighs in favor of that scenario.
America could turn all the majority Muslim countries to glass, though it certainly isn’t likely. Muslims aren’t capable of assuring the destruction of any nation. They’ve been losers since Lepanto. You may claim it’s “obvious” but my guess is that if you surveyed the vast majority of Americans would describe it as a nutty idea. Furthermore, I would suggest you listen to the interview done by Phillip Giraldi just this week on antiwar radio with Scott Horten where he mentions Israel’s foreknowledge of 9/11.
There is simply too much documentation that everything you and everyone you know believes is 100% wrong. I’m afraid I don’t have time to document it, but I’m sure if you spend enough time on the internet you will realize how right I am and wrong you are. At this point in this nation the issue of Israel spying has little relevance given that nations have always spied on each other.
The issue is not Israel but this government who fail miserably to protects its citizens. Protection of citizens abroad is traditional for all nations and recognized in International law.
It is unheard off that a Government would allow foreigners to attack on our soil. harass us, deprive us of our basic rights of freedom of expression for or against political views or policies, as long as we do not use violence it is our right and it is fundamental. I personally used to know an Israeli spy, the way I found out was because I took note of his very Spartan and well funded lifestyle in connection with the very VAGUE line of work he was in.
He never was able to explain to me or his friends what he genuinely did for work that made him so much money. He also only bought healthy, precooked meals that came in packets and lived an extremely methodical lifestyle, as well, he was a huge Jew.
One night after several months of knowing him and while really drunk, I made note of his extremely sparse, methodical and vague lifestyle and just to push the limits of intoxication, told him with a very straight face that I knew he was Mossad. The look on his face was one of sheer, blatant, ghostly astonishment and confusion.
He disappeared the next day and we don’t know what happened to him, he simply left out overnight and no one was given a formal explanation.
I am Jewish, so no racism meant. I just don’t practice Judaism nor do I actually associate myself with Jews.
