The American Conservative and the The Institute for Peace and Diplomacy will co-host a panel discussion titled ‘A Year of Ups and Downs: President Biden’s Foreign Policy at the One-Year Mark’ on February 25, 2022 from 1:30 to 3:00 PM EST.
Over his first year in office, President Biden has been called everything from an appeaser to a realist to a liberal internationalist over his administration’s foreign policy. With the simmering conflict in Ukraine on the horizon, it is likely that foreign policy will feature prominently in the president’s upcoming State of the Union Address.
At times, U.S. foreign policy in the past year has appeared disjointed—a series of disconnected, ad-hoc decisions across different strategic theatres lacking unity or overarching strategy. But is there order and scheme to the madness? Could a Biden doctrine be crystalizing beneath the seemingly divergent and shifting priorities of the Biden national security team? And how does the Biden administration conceive of America’s role in world and U.S. grand strategy in a changing domestic and international political climate?
This panel will review the foreign policy record of the Biden administration so far and consider its future. Our esteemed panelists will offer their insights into developments in Russia, China, Afghanistan, Iran and other pressing international concerns. They will comment on these strategic issues, challenges they may pose for U.S. policy, and the likely path forward.
