Maybe you need to remember the time when New York City hardhats turned their wrenches against some hippy dippy peace demonstrators to be cheered by this: Western Ports Return to Normal after Workers’ War Protest , the AP reports. On May Day, thousands of dockworkers from Seattle to Long Beach walked off the job to protest the Iraq war. True, the campuses are nearly silent, (Harvard students aren’t being asked to fight the Iraq war, and don’t even have to go to the trouble of getting a slick deferment) or perhaps are engaged in solipsistic battles about LGBT rights. But if “the kids” don’t care about Iraq, at least a powerful, old lefty union does.
