Breaux Bridge, Louisiana

We went with friends this morning to the zydeco breakfast at Cafe des Amis in Breaux Bridge. What you see above is my breakfast: a beignet stuffed with boudin, a cup of strong coffee, and a cold Abita Turbodog. Joy!

At the zydeco breakfast, Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners played, and people danced:

Here’s a scene from the cafe. The owner inherited these icons from a Catholic priest relative. Community Coffee is the coffee people in south Louisiana drink:

We scooted over to Poché’s, a Cajun meat market on the other side of town, to stock up on tasso, andouille, and boudin:

Julie and I drove back home through Baton Rouge because we had to run some errands. I bought several links of hot boudin at Poche’s, and started in on them in the car. I needed a diet Coke to wash it down with, so we darted into a Raisin’ Cane’s drive-thru. When I got to the window, the young woman at the register spied my boudin and said, “Ooooh, that looks good! Where you got that?”

“At Poche’s, in Breaux Bridge.”

“I wonder how it tastes compared to Tony’s? You ever had the boudin from Tony’s Seafood?”

“Never have. This from Poche’s is spicy, though. You want a little?”

“Naw, I better not. Here’s your change. You have a good day, sir.”

Driving away, my wife said, “I love this state.” Me too!
