47359930I, for one, am about to wet my pants with glee over the entrance yesterday of Edwin W. Edwards, 86, into a Congressional race in the Baton Rouge area. Now we will have something fun to talk about. Like a Louisiana expat friend of mine texted last night from DC, I too am tired of his shtick, and I suspect most Louisiana voters are too. But he damn sure is going to be entertaining, and really, when it comes to Louisiana politics, who could ask for anything more? This is the slimy Cajun pol for whom we all had to vote in 1991 to prevent Kluckmeister David Duke from becoming governor. I had a sticker on my car at the time: “Vote For The Crook. It’s Important.” Another popular bumper sticker in the day: “Vote For The Lizard, Not The Wizard.” (Duke was the Grand Wizard of the KKK). Edwin is definitely way past his sell-by date, and his kind of politics isn’t in style anymore. But this will be a nostalgia kick, for sure. I’ll enjoy telling my older son, “See that guy? Can you imagine he was governor once upon a time, and popular?”
