K.B., a New Orleans reader with roots in the Florida Parishes of Louisiana, read my item mentioning an incident in 1876 when Francis Bardwell was thought to have cast aspersions on the dignity of Fayette Wells’s wife. Wells found Bardwell and emptied his pistol into the fellow. To have done anything less would have been shameful to those piney-wood folk.
K.B. writes that the Wellses and Bardwells are still around in the piney woods, and still raising hell. For example, this old ad for lawyer Arden Wells, disbarred in 2010 because, according to the state Supreme Court, “He has consistently abused the legal system to exact retribution against individuals who, in his mind, have wronged him.”
