Depending on the outcome in Ohio, tonight could prove to be a fairly good night for Romney. He has won every contest he was expected to win. He prevailed in his real home state of Massachusetts by a huge 60-point margin. The only contests he has lost tonight so far have been in Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Georgia. Except for Oklahoma, McCain lost the same contests to Huckabee four years ago. Because of the failings of the Santorum campaign in Ohio and Tennessee, Romney is in a better position to pick up more delegates from his successes than Santorum will from his, and thanks to Santorum’s failure to get on the Virginia ballot Romney is virtually guaranteed to net more delegates than Santorum. If Romney edges Santorum in Ohio, that will be the second large primary in a row in which Santorum briefly took a significant lead before collapsing in the final days.

Ron Paul quintupled his 2008 Virginia vote count, and because of the smaller turnout overall he octupled his percentage of the vote there. Paul tripled his 2008 result in Vermont, and he did the same in Oklahoma and Massachusetts. He is running ahead of his 2008 numbers in North Dakota, and he has a chance of scoring an upset in Idaho or Alaska.
