Nauert and Trump’s Disdain for Diplomacy

There are multiple reports [1] that Trump is expected to choose State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to be the new ambassador to the U.N. This is the report from Bloomberg [2]:

President Donald Trump has decided to nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to replace departing United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, according to three people familiar with the decision.

Nauert, 48, is an unorthodox choice for the UN role given that she had little experience in government or foreign policy before joining the administration in April 2017 after several years as an anchor and correspondent for Fox News, including on the “Fox and Friends” show watched by Trump.

Nauert’s nomination was in doubt as recently as last week, and there were reports that Trump had been considering other candidates, including Michigan Senate candidate John James [3]. It now appears that Trump’s original preference [4] for the unqualified Nauert has won out. Outgoing U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley had insisted that her position remain a Cabinet-level one, but it is likely that it will be downgraded again according to Pompeo’s preferences. Nauert isn’t qualified to be U.N. ambassador, but then neither was Haley, and Pompeo wasn’t and isn’t qualified to be Secretary of State. Everyone responsible for guiding U.S. diplomacy under Trump has been and will continue to be unsuited to the jobs to which they have been appointed. The appointment of Nauert just underscores that Trump has no interest in diplomacy or expertise, and he just wants people willing to recite nonsensical talking points.

Well at least she wasn’t the “weather girl”

OT:

Daniel, I was going to purchase the course “The World of Byzantium” taught by Kenneth Harl of Tulane University through The Great Courses. Do you have any knowledge of this offering or of Harl’s work in the subject? I wouldn’t mind getting an expert’s opinion before diving in. Thanks!

Actually, her time a Faux means that she is highly qualified for the role of parroting the party line.

Nauert is going to handle very badly the fact that she can’t expel Russia from the UNSC meetings. She got rid of RT (Russian TV) from the U.S. State Dept. press briefings so she didn’t have to respond to their questions. Even John Kirby her predecessor in that job had RT at it’s briefings and he hates Russia too.

Nauert is a dimwit, but she hates Russia, so clearly the liberals will love her (but they will still say Trump is a puppet to Russia).

Its like the entire United States government is a pick-up team.

Trump seems to like lightweights in important jobs. Why? I suspect that Trump only can deal with people who will not disagree with him or challenge him. The less qualified they are the better.

Trump also seems to like people from Fox News, which has become the fourth branch of government. What next? Another Fox News blonde as Secretary of Defense? God help us.

What competent person would want to join this administration and sully their reputations? This is the best he can get.

She’s bound to be an improvement over Haley, who was painfully out of her depth and repeatedly verged on moral idiocy, particularly during her needlessly full-throated defenses of Saudi Arabia and Israel’s attacks on children and unarmed civilians. Those were defining moments, moments when you’re forced to choose between good and evil, and they should spell the end of her hopes of future office.

Nauert strikes me as a tad smarter. Maybe she’ll be able to keep our malodorous Middle Eastern “friends” from defining her the way they defined Haley.

I recall an analysis showing that Trump’s tweets seem to reflect whatever idiocies had just run on Fox & Friends.

So it may be that Trump does not give his people their doltish talking points so much as Trump surrounds himself with dolts and gets his talking points from them.

Small Favors, well hold on to your hat; I predict Nikki will be the first female President. GOP, worked for DT, experience in office, immigrant parents, female, not crazy = a sellable package. I’m not saying she is the most qualified person to be President, but look at what we have now. Qualifications? What Qualifications? We don’t need no stinkin’ qualifications!!! (Apologies to Treasure of the Sierra Madre).

Trump got elected by repeating nonsensical talking points. “Mexico will pay for the wall.” “Lock her up!” “Trade wars are good and easy to win.” “I alone can fix it!”

Just tell her not to talk about the War.

Our entire political class is inbred and infantile and demented like the effete and degenerate royalty of the Middle Ages. There is no hope here.

MOST parts of the world now have mature, sane, even brilliant leaders. Those parts will continue to succeed as we continue to collapse.

“Small Favors, well hold on to your hat; I predict Nikki will be the first female President. “

No way. Having taken a job for which she knew she was unqualified and unfit, she commenced a tour-de-force of blunders and embarrassments, mostly covering for the Saudis and Israel instead of pursuing America’s own foreign policy interests. And it all culminated in an unprecedented spectacle — world leaders openly guffawing at America during a meeting of the UN General Assembly a few weeks ago. A nadir in US diplomatic history. The video of Haley looking helpless and stupid while the foreign ministers and diplomats sneer and snicker at America is worth its weight in election gold to whoever runs against her.

She knew it would only get worse, especially with the vile Mike Pompeo sitting on her head, so she quit. The Israel and Saudi money boys will talk her up for a while, like they talked up Rubio (and for the same reason, “diversity pick” who can pull conservative votes) but the taint won’t go away. As a national figure, Haley’s done.

Nauert should have a happier fate, because she doesn’t expect as much.

polistra, you got that right. Maybe you’ve seen this video, comparing Justin Trudeau talking about quantum computing and DJT talking about “nuclear”:

How about Cameron Diaz to replace John Kelly? Trump could then argue for having assembled the blondest administration in US history

#18 Comment By Kevin Bishop On December 8, 2018 @ 7:07 pm

Let’s face it. Every single one of Trump’s appointees is unqualified. This one is simply a slap in the face to anyone who has the audacity to expect some level and semblance of competency in the people he appoints.

Ambassador Barbie?

#20 Comment By lookee here On December 9, 2018 @ 12:40 pm

“Ambassador Barbie?”

Why not? We’ve already got National Security Adviser Kong, Secretary of State Keyser Soeze and President Moron. Besides, Barbie’s good-lookin’. It’s about time we had a UN ambassador who can raise the temperature in the room without opening their mouth.
