Memo to McCain: The Soviet Union Is Gone
The Cold War isn’t over for McCain:
“It maybe could be, say 1920, where we now have a dictator in Russia along the lines of Lenin and his successors,” McCain said. “We now have a guaranteed dictatorship for at least 12 years in Russia, so that goes back to previous times.”
The current Russian political system is certainly a repressive and authoritarian one, but it is extremely misleading and ignorant to claim that it is a dictatorship “along the lines of Lenin and his successors.” McCain may not fully appreciate how preposterous this comparison is. The Soviet dictatorship under Lenin and Stalin was vastly more destructive, oppressive, and evil than any regime that has ruled Russia since 1991. Ask the Moscow Patriarchate if the two have anything in common. There is simply no comparing the two systems, and pretending that they are alike is to trivialize the horror of the Soviet totalitarian system and to ignore how much better things are since the end of communism.
