Thus spake Tom Gaines, a long-time supporter and personal friend of Sen. Lieberman, who together with his wife broke with Lieberman only after he announced his decision to run as an independent if he lost the primary.  Ironically, his declaration of perseverance appears to have made it inevitable that he will have to run as an independent, since that decision has alienated even some of his most die-hard supporters.  Whoever advised him to make that announcement before the primary should be relegated to getting the man’s coffee, but I guess this is why silly people are calling Joe “the last honest man.”

In fact, the danger of a GOP gain that so horrified the Gaineses may still be in the cards–thanks in part to their horrified reaction to Lieberman’s willingness to risk a GOP pick-up in the state.  If the Red Republicans do make a gain in Connecticut it is probably the only place in America, except perhaps Washington (where clueless Maria Cantwell is flailing), where they will do so this year.  No wonder the Republican “Commentern” has been so enthusiastic for Lieberman–his kamikaze campaign provides the only opening they have for making actual gains in the year of the predicted electoral “hurricane.”
