On the Building of Fortresses

NOTE: I decided to delete this post. I don’t have any wisdom to offer in a situation where wisdom is the only thing that’s useful, and I shouldn’t be adding to the noise. Apologies.

UPDATE: A couple of people have emailed to ask for a fuller acccount of why I took my post down. I guess I’d put it this way: I posted my thoughts in the first place not because I thought I had something significant and meaningful to add to what has already been said, but because it seemed wrong not to say something, not to indicate that I care, not to let people think that I find last night’s viewing of The Hobbit more important than the horror that took place yesterday morning in Newtown. It was just signaling, not substance.

Ross Douthat has something to say, though. Please read his column.
