This is a special VFYT. What you see here are the appetizers I shared with Mike Sugimoto, a professor at Pepperdine who has been one of the all-time great VFYT contributors. We met tonight, and had dinner at Duke’s, a restaurant on the beach here in Malibu. The food came to the table after the sun went down, so you can’t see in the photo what’s just beyond the plates. I took this photo through the glass next to our table while it was still light out:

I texted that to my wife, who texted back this, which she titled “View From My Laundry Pile”:

Duly chastened and worn out, I’m going to bed. For the first time since we started, I’m going to miss a Dante canto tonight. But folks, it’s an important canto, and I want to give it my all. There’s not a lot to give tonight. For the record, Mike and I ate scallops, a layered salad with lobster and avocado, and a sort of seafood curry with lobster, shrimp, and scallops, over rice. It was fantastic, and it was such a kick to meet someone with whom I’ve been corresponding on and off this blog for years. Thank you, Mrs. Sugimoto, for letting Mike come out to play tonight.
