St. Francisville, Louisiana

This is cheating on VFYT, a bit. I have been working all afternoon and early evening on baking prosphora (communion bread) for our church. It has to be baked according to a particular recipe, in a particular style. That seal you see on the right must be pressed into the top of each small loaf. The seal has the Greek letters IC XC NIKA, which means “Jesus Christ Conquers.”

It’s easy to do in theory, making prosphora, but this was my first time to do it by myself, and it took much, much longer than it ought to have done. But there’s no way to learn how to do it except by doing it. I’m wrapping up in the kitchen now, and will say a prayer to finish the job. These loaves you see in the foreground ready for the oven, and those you see in the background having come out of the oven, will all be used in the Divine Liturgy, as the first meal the people of our parish will eat on one Sunday in the future.
