Sabrina Schaeffer criticizes a thing called The Shriver Report — a “new bound document” (how NBC’s Brian Williams described it on Nightly) talking about how hard women in America have it. Schaeffer:

Far more than simply a catalogue of challenges, The Shriver Report is a political campaign that includes essays by stars like LeBron James and Eva Longoria, an HBO documentary, a full-day event hosted by The Atlantic, and an official presentation of the findings to President Obama. The report succeeds at exposing just how vulnerable many women – especially unmarried women – are, and sheds light on some of the legitimate challenges they face. But the study does little to explore the driving forces behind these challenges, and instead focuses on perpetuating the myth that American society is inherently unfair to women and girls today, and only a growing state can change things.

First I heard about this thing was on Tuesday night’s NBC newscast, which ran a highly sympathetic account from its correspondent on the case, Ms. Maria Shriver. Brian Williams introduced it by citing Beyoncé, who takes a stand in the report for wage equality for women. “Men have to demand that their wives, daughters, mothers and sisters earn more,” the entertainer says.

So there you have it. A celebrity who, along with her husband, made $95 million last year, is taking a bold stand for social justice, and telling American men what to do. Good luck with that. I, for one, would like to see Jay-Z demand that his wife earns more. “Wife, I demand that you earn more!” or “See here, sirrah, my wife only made $50 million last year. This is an outrage! I demand she earn more, or else!”

The whole thing struck me as a silly stunt. LeBron James writing a letter about how great his mama is? This is not the way to get people to take your New Bound Document seriously. It’s just weird, this marketing. Did they interview the Elf On The Shelf for this New Bound Document?
