The Pleasures Of Bad Food

What's your junk food guilty pleasure?

This morning I was watching the Scotland episode of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown”. In Glasgow, Bourdain goes into a cafe where everything is deep fat fried (view the clip above). He has the fried haggis with curry sauce. Bourdain says that he knows this stuff is bad for you, but he loves it so very much.

I think we all get that, right? Today, on Thanksgiving, I’d like to start a thread in which readers mention their favorite culinary guilty pleasures: food that you know is crap, that you know is bad for you, but that tastes so damn good you can’t resist.

I have several of them, but the one that comes first to mind is the Sonic Drive-In hamburger. Sonic Drive-In is a chain that’s big here in the South (and maybe elsewhere too, I don’t know). They make my favorite fast-food hamburger. I don’t know what it is about the Super Sonic No. 1 (double meat) with mayo that sends me into the junk food stratosphere, but boy, does it ever. It is total junk food, and bliss-making. There is no explanation for this. It is what it is. And you know what? Nine times out of ten, it takes about seven minutes after my last bite for the heartburn to kick in. It is always worth it.

How about you?

(By the way, I expect some good Thanksgiving table Views From Your Table in my inbox over the next day or two. Remember the rules: 1) thought it’s fine to include people in your shots, you must not feature faces that are recognizable; 2) mention the place where it was taken (e.g., “Topeka, Kansas”); and 3) don’t simply point your camera at the food and shoot; the idea is to show the food in a context. The food should be the focus of the image, but also give us a sense of the environment in which it was served. Email to rod — at — amconmag — dot — com.)
