Take a look at those clips from last night’s Colbert Report. Stephen Colbert, a Hachette author, pummeled Amazon.com for its stance in its fight with publisher Hachette. In the second clip, he brought on Hachette author Sherman Alexie to explain why this is a rotten deal. Alexie talks about how first-time authors risk being ruined by Amazon’s game. To fight this on behalf of a new novel called California, Colbert worked out a deal through the legendary independent bookstore Powell’s, to sell the novel — and he directed his viewers to Powell’s website.

Brilliant! I hope Colbert will consider having other Hachette authors (me! me! me!) who haven’t established themselves as successfully as he, Malcolm Gladwell, and others have, onto his show to talk about our books, and to direct sales to Powell’s.

Whatever happens, thank you, Stephen Colbert. Give ’em hell.

UPDATE: Barry Eisler takes the other side. Good column.

Say, readers, please be patient with me today. I’m going to be running around all day putting last-minute touches on our Walker Percy Weekend festival, and won’t be around to approve comments in a timely fashion, or to blog as much as I otherwise would have done. Needless to say, I’m going to be fairly scarce around here for the next few days. Thanks for your understanding, and I’m looking forward to meeting some of you at the festival.
