I just had a conversation with my two younger kids as I put them to bed. They knew I had watched the president give a speech on Syria, and they wanted to know what the Syria debate is about. I explained it to them as well as I could about the war, and why it’s such a difficult problem to solve. The responses they gave said a lot, I think, about the instinctive difference between men and women:

Girl, 6: “Why do people have to go to war? It’s so stupid. We should not mess with it. Why don’t those people in Syria just stop it? It’s not helping anybody at all.” (Eyes roll dramatically)

Boy, 9: “You’re probably not going to agree with this, Dad, but I think we should drop a few small atomic bombs over there and just wipe them all out. That way there wouldn’t be anybody left in Syria to fight wars. Problem solved.”
