1. James C., Sordello, and I are going to celebrate the Fourth of July in Lyon at the Café des Fédérations. We will have dinner the night before with Prof. J-F Mayer at Le Boeuf d’Argent, and Sunday lunch at Café Comptoir Abel. My liver will spend the rest of the summer recovering.

Any other foodie stops in Lyon to consider? I’m thinking probably Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse.  Help me out here.

2. Sordello and I will be in Siena earlier in the week. I’m on some Dante business, and we will be present to see the Palio.  We need to pick a contrada — or does a contrada pick us once we’re there, ambling around? Anybody here been to the Palio? Can you tell me? And: where should we eat in Siena? Besides the Taverna San Giuseppe, I mean, where Casella and I had our best meal in Italy last fall.

3. Tonight I watched an Anthony Bourdain episode about Iran. The food looked absolutely magical. One day, inshallah, I’m going to Isfahan to eat. Reader Mohammad, you have been warned!

Look, it’s the Café Comptoir Abel:
