Have you ever cheated death, by which I mean had a very close call with death? I can’t say that I have, though I was in a pick-up that was rammed hard from behind by an 18-wheeler whose driver was traveling faster than he ought to have been. The truck was totaled, but it’s hard to say that was really cheating death.

On another occasion, I was in a car that spun out of control on the New Jersey turnpike when it hit a patch of water. We spun several times across every lane of traffic, and ended up about a foot away from the concrete barriers on the other side, facing oncoming traffic. None of us were injured, nor was the car damaged in the slightest. Our friend who was driving gathered himself quickly, and continued driving toward New York. I remember the guy in the passenger seat in the front praying out loud as we spun and spun.

But I don’t know that that was cheating death either.

How about you? How did it change you, if it changed you at all?
