Washington, DC – The American Conservative announced today that Benjamin Schwarz has joined its team as national editor.

Schwarz was for 13 years the literary and national editor at The Atlantic, where he recruited and published writers from Christopher Hitchens to Sandra Tsing Loh. The Los Angeles Times called his books section there “the shrewdest, best-written and most surprising cultural report currently on offer between slick covers.” Before that he was a national correspondent for the magazine, executive editor of World Policy Journal, and a national-security analyst at the RAND Corporation.

Schwarz’s appointment is made possible by a grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, which is supporting The American Conservative‘s New Urbanism initiative to expand the conversation around sustainable, humane communities. Schwarz will help lead this initiative, in addition to contributing to the magazine’s editorial vision and complement of writers.

Schwarz said: “I’m proud to be a part of such a heterodox and thoughtful magazine, a publication that has brought to bear elegant writing, precise thinking, and an intellectual independence to the most vital foreign policy, political, and cultural debates. Now, thanks to the Driehaus Foundation, TAC is doing the same in probing the way we live now, and the way we should live, in our cities and suburbs.”

Daniel McCarthy, editor of The American Conservative, said: “Ben is a legend in the industry, and we’re fortunate beyond our dreams in having him aboard. He brings to The American Conservative one of the finest literary and foreign-policy minds in the country—just the combination we like.”

In August, Maisie Allison, who leads digital and special projects for the magazine, was promoted to executive editor.

The American Conservative is on track to post another record-setting year in traffic. Monthly page views this year are up 20 percent over 2013.
