Peggy Noonan’s piece this morning about the prospects for an Election Night Return of the Living Dead is important in that it breathes life into the last remaining spell the Republicans have to cast in hopes of eeking out a victory on Nov 4. The key: the charge of “triumphalism” on the part of Democrats. How this can possibly be performed effectively? Knuckleheads like this:

carville

Democrats who have been working tirelessly to shake the smell of death, and, while happily waving off the likes of the Democratic Leadership Council, and to a certain extent, Hillary Clinton, in their rear-views, must have been startled by the cold skeletal hands of Carville and Begala creeping around their necks in their recent bloody valentine to the party on Monday (emphasis mine):

As Barack Obama and the Democrats appear poised for an historic sweep, we have a message for our Republican friends: It is time to point fingers…The Republican Party is atomizing, and each faction must participate in Project BLAME.

Carville and Begala, who took possession of the Democratic house in 1992 with the election of Bill Clinton and have failed to elect another Democratic president since (who can say with any confidence that they didn’t actively torpedo John Kerry’s candidacy in 2004? The stink was certainly there). They cannot take credit for Clinton’s re-election in 1996 and certainly didn’t help him — or congressional Democrats — during the Monica Lewinsky-tainted 1998 elections. After the disasters of 2000 and 2004, self-styled progressives on the left decided it was enough and tried to exorcise their demons. And they’re not stupid: the posters on Daily Kos have already been warning about complacency and triumphalism and know that the charges of “already measuring for drapes” is a desperate, yet effective incantation in the last days of a 24-hour media-driven election, one that will likely be decided by a sliver of independent swing voters.

Unfortunately they will find that the media establishment loves these old zombies, and even Bruce Campbell and his “boomstick” can’t keep Carville and Begala down when there’s a camera in the way. Democrats better hope they can contain the message and not allow their bad seeds to grow eleventh-hour stink weeds.
