I am wondering if other TAC readers noticed the metamorphoses in a New York Times article that I noted last night and this morning? A featured article appeared on the NYT website last night under the headline “United States War Game Sees Disaster in an Israeli Attack on Iran.” By this morning that headline had replaced “disaster” with “perils,” softening the message while the link itself says “dire results.” If one actually reads the article, disaster would appear to be much the best word, the text describing a conflict that would quickly become regional and drag the US in with unfortunate consequences for Americans in general and for the military presence in Asia. While it is refreshing that the mainstream media is finally waking up to the fact that war with Iran would not be a “cakewalk,” it is also discouraging to note that efforts are being made to manage the message to keep the attack option on the table. No doubt Senators Graham, McCain and Lieberman would regard “perils” as an acceptable risk to take.

Happens all the time. What Orwell called “the memory hole” is now called “dynamic content”. Internet editions make it appallingly easy.
To your point, we can’t have Americans too anxious about Israel dragging us into yet another war, can we?

It really makes you wonder who might have leaned on them overnight. If you think that’s paranoid, remember the Pentagon has a $5 billion budget for ‘strategic communications.”

SteveM, I agree with you that the NYT is totally in the tank for Obama. No doubt about it.
They were more than happy to act as Obama’s cheerleaders in the Libyan fiasco.
But I’m not convinced that Obama is angling for an Iranian war; on the contrary, I think he is looking for a way to avoid taking action while mollifying the Lobby. I think it’s more likely that the Times’ softening of the headline is designed to push Obama into action rather than providing cover for a strike that he has already decided upon.

Re: B. Wooster
I see your point, but my take on it is that the Times is totally reactive. I.e., They may have an opinion, but won’t state it explicitly if it may counter Obama in some respect.
And they don’t know what Obama will do, but whatever he does will be retroactively all right with them.
Stupid, self-absorbed Power Elite Yes Men – The NY Times is trash…

The NY Times is totally in the tank for Obama. “Perils” is a backdoor way for the NY Times to give Obama wiggle room to start another war.
After which Times’ editorial sycophants will cobble together the usual twisted logic of the Power Elites to justify and rationalize why being a Leftist war-monger is just swell.
