This Sunday the left-right antiwar coalition Come Home America is sponsoring a discussion of U.S. foreign policy featuring Ralph Nader, Kelley Vlahos, Kevin Zeese, and yours truly. What are the prospects for conservatives, progressives, and libertarians teaming up against empire? And if a coalition is possible, what can it achieve? We’ll be tackling those questions and many more. Here are the details:

Seems to me “exploring [that] potential” means probing just how far each side is willing to be consistent.
Yeah, Lefties today are against what we’re doing in the ME for the most part. But if, say, Clinton had committed us into Rwanda for instance, what would we here be saying? E.g., what about a Samantha Powers “anti-genocide” policy, with all its potential for mischief?
And what about Lefties and others agreeing that indeed the U.S. has not just the right but the duty to indeed at least sometimes go to war to defend our interests, and that there’s nothing wrong with that? While ultimately it seems to me the Left and liberals sang their songs against Vietnam on the basis of it not being “worth it” to the U.S., there was no lack of admiration back then in certain circles for those waving North Vietnam flags and talking of Ho Chi Minh as if he was Thomas Jefferson.
Seems to me conservatives and libertarians too even (like moi) could give at least some nod of agreement to the U.S. indeed using force on clear occasion for purely humanitarian ends. Esp. if it was part of some larger world coalition. After all we are supposed to believe in *some* universal values.
On the other hand I’m suspicious of some of the Left whether they’d ever agree to the use of U.S. force for U.S. interests. Give ‘em a hypothetical: What about Mexico disintegrating (as if it already ain’t) and you had a Mexican gov’t or big groups there clearly subsidizing terrorism here to reclaim Axtlan or whatever they call it from Cali and Texas and New Mexico?
