Joe Scarborough, The New Hope?

The Politico is confirming some of my earlier buzzing about Joe Scarborough, though hopefully he knows better to wait for 2016, and to be sure his statements in the article strongly hint in that direction. Though they also talk up the tragic David Petraeus, not even as a sop to the neocons, who are totally over him, but to one-foot-in-the-graver Bob Dole.

I suppose any buzz around either one is just a reflection of Republican desperation, even while the likes of Jennifer Rubin are in a When Prophecy Fails trance that Obama is the new Carter. But let’s just hope that Scarborough isn’t pushed into 2012 by those who want it to be principled conservatism that takes the fall.

He is not a true conservative. If he was, state-run MSNBC wouldn’t have him!

While I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit this, I’m inclined to think Scarborough would make a good candidate, and a possibly quite good President. Its not like we have much in the way of better options (my impression of ex-Rep. Scarborough is that he has distinct paleocon tendencies, particularly with regard to foreign policy, where such tendencies would be especially welcome). I can understand the idea that it would be better if he ran in 2016, but on the other hand, I’m not at all certain Barack Obama’s re-election is in any way assured. A potentially strong candidate like Scarborough may be required to beat him, however; I’m not sure Mitt Romney is up to the task, and I’m quite sure Tim Pawlenty, Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, and Mike Huckabee are not. Scarborough and his potential supporters should take a close look at what happens in 2010, which I suspect will bear a striking resemblance to what occurred in 1994. Of course, we all thought Bill Clinton was toast in 1996, but Barack Obama just isn’t as wily as Bill Clinton, and hopefully he won’t have the option of running against a 2012 equivalent of 1996′s Bob Dole….

I like Joe, but he has to deal to a something sophisticated audience on MSNBC. If he would have to raise money within the Republican Base he would have to talk different and he would sound horribly as any Republican today.

Joe has apparently been trying to position himself for a run in 2010 or 2012 – IT’S VERY OBVIOUS. Unfortunately, those of us who regularly watch his show know that the real “joe” is unsophisticated, wrong so many times, and has a horrible disposition. There is no way in hell America will elect Joe. I must say the GOP has slim pickings and that fact that they are down to Scarborough is telling. Who’s next Buchanan.
