The Enlightened White Man’s Burden

Pat reminds us of his brilliance yet again in taking on the ever-dreary national greatness conceit about the decline of our science and math test scores.  He cites a study by the great Steve Sailer showing that White and Asian test scores still beat all but a very few European and East Asian countries and that it is Black and Hispanic scores keeping the numbers down.  Per the above link to Lew Rockwell, I have always detested the science and math score conceit as just so much hand-wringing from the NBC school of national greatness liberalism (and to be sure, often enough, the national greatness conservatives).  But this revelation from going behind the numbers reveals something far more pernicious.

I trust it is hardly an original observation with me that all of our righteous NGO trendiness toward Africa is but so much window-dressing for keeping the white man master in Africa while China, India, and Dubai are scrambling for their respective pieces of the pie.  But the fundamental racism, pathologically determined to deny itself, of enlightened white liberalism seems most evident in the science-and-math conceit.  The pathologies of our national greatness religion cannot allow for an acknowledgment that the majority-minority America of 2050, if indeed the Union is even still in tact, will not be the harbinger of an inter-racial global millennium as they would like to believe.

This is the new white man’s burden – to uplift that chosen segment of the brown people that will yet one day lead the American empire.  It has failed before it has even begun.

  2. Wow just writing off America’s future by using stats cooked up by the almost totally debunked Steve Sailer. Doesn’t get much more depressing then this!

  3. National math test scores continue to be disappointing. This poor trend persists in spite of new texts, standardized tests with attached implied threats, or laptops in the class. At some point, maybe we should admit that math, as it is taught currently and in the recent past, seems irrelevant to a large percentage of grade school kids.

Why blame a sixth grade student or teacher trapped by meaningless lessons? Teachers are frustrated. Students check out.

The missing element is reality. Instead of insisting that students learn another sixteen formulae, we need to involve them in tangible life projects. And the task must be interesting.

Project-oriented math engages kids. It is fun. They have a reason to learn the math they may have ignored in the standard lecture format of a class room.

  4. Kyle K,

If you don’t approve of Mr. Sailer then what are you doing on a site like The American Conservative?

  5. Meissner, dude, it’s cool:

If you follow Kyle’s link, this is what you find him saying:

“I’m a terror ass kicking man who bleeds the red white and blue. I hate racism, terrorism, liberalism, communism, islamopacifism, nazism, neocons like ron paul and pat buchanan make me wanna jam a rowing oar straight up my ass.”

He just called Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan’s neocons. He’s a “Pro-war, Pro-America Conservative”, presumably Jewish, and he called them neocons. You’re not dealing with an especially sharp or coherent individual.

  6. I’m just perusing the web this morning and came across this article. I don’t have time to deep-dive but the subject was interesting. I’m a well-known scientist with about 30 years of experience and here’s my take on “math” in the U.S. Stop trying to force-feed everyone. Only a very few will ever see the beauty of the subject. Identify these select individuals and groom them. Otherwise, 99.999% of the rest of the U.S. won’t need anything other than simple basic algebra. The comments about teaching life-goals was right on. Rather than teach an inner city kid about singularities, teach them about compound interest or how to maintain a balance ledger. Give them skills where they can become self-employed rather than becoming a government statistic on some “diversity” chart. Teach kids to take care of themselves, to become their own bosses, to grow their own foods, mend their own clothes,..teach them to DO and not just to become talking-heads. We have too many dead-head zombies in the U.S. today just sitting around, living life “virtually”, getting fat, watching TV, buying every cheap piece of plastic they think will make them happy. We are constructing our futures on 90% virtual crap, and only 10% substance.
