We Stand at Armageddon, ready to do battle for The Lord

John Bolton was pushing for war with Iran on The Daily Show the other night, Steve Walt deconstructs him handily with video of the interview.  Jon Stewart, as usual, gives Bolton a pretty good thrashing as well, though I wish he had been more direct on the point that we can live with a nuclear Iran.

I remember years ago Stephen Colbert had a good bit frankly comparing John Bolton to Theodore Roosevelt, in physical appearance on top of everything else.  Last October I was showing a friend my coffee table books on the history of presidential elections, and whenever we came to the pictures of Teddy at San Juan Hill I would start chanting “John McCain! John McCain! John McCain!”

For the neocons, this final push against Iran is undoubtedly their Armageddon, which is clear from their (and, not incidentally, Israel’s) desperation now but also particularly at the height of protests in Iran last June.  While some of my pro-Obama conceit has been wearing off lately, the events last June were a stark reminder of why McCain had to be kept out of the White House at all costs.

As for where things stand now, Pat, as usual, hit it right on the head.

  1. “While some of my pro-Obama conceit has been wearing off lately, the events last June were a stark reminder of why McCain had to be kept out of the White House at all costs.”

Do you honestly think McCain would have been worse than this socialist creature? It’s hard to take anyone seriously who writes such things, but especially a self-identified conservative!

  2. McCain may or may not have intervened militarily after the Iranian election, but in any event he would have acted with extreme and vintage recklessness. On economics, he would have likely been more or less the same.

  3. Well that basically confirms your ignorance in my eyes. McCain would have never nationalized the banks or car companies. And yes, I believe he would have vocally supported the regime’s dissenters – Thank God.

  4. Kissinger would have been one of McCain’s advisers, and I didn’t notice David Frum manning the wheel either. McCain may have pushed for some sort of cap and trade deal, but he certainly wouldn’t have wanted a single payer national health service. If you didn’t like either candidate, but really wanted to make those darned neo-cons scurry off, you should have voted for Chuck Baldwin or Bob Barr or wrote in Ron Paul. Obama is not a conservative or a rightist or a centrist in any form or fashion, and I’m perplexed as to how one can reconcile being a rightist in any sense while supporting Obama vis a vis this “pro-obama conceit”.

  5. I could not in good conscience vote for either candidate in this past election. So I voted for Samantha Brown, that wonderfully perky lady on the Travel Channel. I have no regrets.

  6. I don’t think it is the lord we would be battling over. It would be the Pipelineistan that Pepe Escobar writes about.

  7. Thomas, that is awesome. I now regret throwing my vote away on Ralph Nader!
