A nonprofit-sector quarterly magazine in Australia, such as I edit, works to a wholly different rhythm from a monthly magazine in D.C., let alone a daily newspaper in the Big Apple. And yet, despite that difference, I can identify with the complaints expressed here.

When it comes to motivating a quarterly's contributors (and this includes designing / printing staff as well as authors), "pulling teeth" is perhaps la phrase juste, whatever the monetary rewards involved. One feels almost as if one is trying to persuade a part-time barbershop quartet - the members of which appear to have discerned absolutely no aspect of Western Civ apart from the material dominating their barbershop consciousness - that it wouldn't actually kill them to get their heads around Handel's Messiah sometime.

Incidentally, every editor should have on his or her bookshelves Thurber's The Years With Ross. A true tonic for the literary spirit.
