I liked Avatar a lot more than I expected to, including the story, which was rather predictable but still emotionally sympathetic. My only problem is with the notion that these kinds of things can end so well and relatively easily. They seldom do. I hear Cameron is going to make two more sequels now that this one has proved successful, and I hope he brings out some of the complications of imagining that an insurgency can be won so easily, and so purely.

Randy Newman has this one:

We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us-so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them.

Hey Daniel.

I've been a fan of your blog for a while. You've really influenced my thinking on US foreign policy. You brought up issues in this post that I wish you'd blog about more. You mention poor governance and slow economic development.

So should we be spending less time/money on development aid and international treaties? Are you opposed to, e.g., the Millennium Challenge Corporation? How about international treaties like Kyoto and the Montreal Protocol?

Based on your writing, I believe that if you had your way we would tone down our rhetoric on Iran, Honduras and Georgia, withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan, remove troops from Germany, etc. Would you also slash the budget of USAID and withdraw from Copenhagen? Along those lines, the US is involved in several inter-governmental science organizations (I play a small role in one myself). Do we abandon or restrict such efforts in your ideal world?

Thanks.

"...Westerners, and it was the Serbs’ status as European Christians that made them ideal as a target of intervention."

Nah, it was the fact that they were the dirtyest side in a war.
Please note that the Coats, last I heard, were also Christian.
