I remember The Economist back in the 1990's; it was interesting, because it was a bunch of right-wingers who were (a) not US cultural right-wingers and (b) were very aware that they were not US citizens, but foreigners (no US jingoism).

That's long gone; they're just a bunch of WSJ neoconmen, with less right-wing evangelicalism.

does the economist seriously think that there is enough force anywhere on the globe to reorder the world? after the bellicose ignorance of the last eight years, more like gomer pyle than aldne pyle, i welcome a relatively quiet, (humble?), american at the helm.

"The problem with the Pyle character wasn’t that he underestimated “how bad the world is,” but that he grossly overestimated his own abilities (and the abilities of Americans in general) to “reorder the world” as desired. In other words, The Economist wants Obama to be more like Alden Pyle and they don’t seem to understand that this is what they want."

Considering (a) their general political position and (b) the amount of time that they spent drooling for expansions of American Empire, I'd say that they *do* understand what they want. Remember, the destruction and waste don't bite them on the *ss. Except for the recent financial meltdown, and they're not living in the street yet.
