Hey! we are the Roman empire! Seriously, when Roman collapsed the church survived in part because they took over a lot of state functions. The Bishops were frequently the only people the barbarian chiefs had to talk to.

Indeed, the Green Wave is using exactly the same techniques that toppled the tyrant Shah.....rooftop nighttime chants of Allahu Akbar, non-violent protest marches, exploiting the mourning dates for the martyred.

The protestors are not losing. The Shi'ia survived the Umayydd Caliphate after the martyrdom of Ali, and the Shi'ia will survive this.
Can an oligarchy ever overcome a religious movement? Consider the christians and romans. The mighty roman empire is dust and ashes today, and the Roman Catholic Church is the largest land-owner in the world.
They even stole their name.

Regarding Iran, it is true that the protesters have been using the language of martyrdom to describe those who have been killed, but that also means that the protesters are losing the political fight, much as Husayn did at Karbala.

It may or may not be true that the protesters are losing, but their honoring of their fallen isn't proof of it. They did the same in the year-long movement that brought down the Shah.
