Actually, South Africa did go nuclear, though not openly. They and the Israelis cooperatively developed nuclear weapons in the 1970s, but never publically acknowledged this. We didn't make a stink about it for the same reason we didn't object to the Israeil nuclear program: these were both our allies.

The South Africa analogy falls a bit short in that South Africa wasn't on the brink of going nuclear.. but then to neocons, nukes are a good excuse to bomb, so the point is worth ignoring in their attempts to goad Obama into the Great Satan trap.

At what point does the right realize that history has passed them by...and some memes are utterly discreditted?
It's like bad memes are the orphan puppies of Reihanistan.

What's important to remember is that neocons (despite being wrong so often that a more suspicious people would have dragged them out and hanged them for obviously being traitors) are still sitting in the same chairs, collecting paychecks, getting column inches and TV time. In a sense, they're like Tobacco Institute 'medical researchers'; they're paid liars, and truth comes from their lips only by mistake.

Teacher: Earth-That-Was could no longer sustain our numbers, we were so many. We found a new solar system, dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. Each one terraformed, a process taking decades, to support human life, to be new Earths. The Central Planets formed the Alliance. Ruled by an interplanetary parliament, the Alliance was a beacon of civilization. The savage outer planets were not so enlightened and refused Alliance control. The war was devastating, but the Alliance's victory over the Independents ensured a safer universe. And now everyone can enjoy the comfort and enlightenment of our civilization.

Young River: People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

Why is it that they can't see themselves?
You are right of course......nothing will ever satisfy them but turning the Arabian peninsula into a plain of black glass and slant drilling under it.

The last paragraph reminds me of a description of a Minnesota right wing politician who was (thankfully no longer) very involved in transportation policy:

When the conversation was about light rail, she wanted to talk about buses. When talking about buses, she switched topics to roads and bridges. If cars were on the agenda, she only mentioned tax cuts.

Is this a (right) wing nut phenomenon? No limo liberals even attempt this, do they?
