Maybe these are the motives for Kagan and the neoconservative's opinionating. It's hard to tell ranging as they do from the merely eyerolling to the totally loopy. I put the universally similar response from the far right down to a desire to stoke tensions with Iran in the interests of Israel and to the knee jerk response of Republicans/conservative to find some pretext to attack the president. Let's face it when they are reduced to criticising condiment choices and nights out with the old lady anything, literally anything, will do. The only voice of commonsense on this matter I've seen on the right so far is from Lugar, as usual, who is demonstrating some maturity and operating in the national interest unlike the rest of them.

Look at the fact that that the Iranian Foreign Ministry is still complaining about American intervention, and certain government leaders are using this to claim the opposition is anti-Islam and therefore can be executed. These are pretty good indicators of where the regime would head if Obama made immediate and forceful statements: a nascent rebellion put down in the first few days under claims of US involvement and soon forgotten.

All very well put, Daniel. One wonders if Kagan (et al) really believe themselves or if this is all purely political. Which is to say they obviously believe that their long-term agenda is "right" but do they actually believe what they write about Obama, etc. etc? I don't think they do. I think they're playing a game and I think they've taken it too far.
